“The Wilderlands” narrated by Rae Witte, available now

If you’re reading this, then the audiobook release of The Wilderlands is available now via most major audiobook distributors.

The narrator is Rae Witte, a Michigan-based actor who did a phenomenal job adapting the material. As I mentioned to her after listening through the first time, I walked away from her audio recording wishing I’d written more scenes for certain characters who she did especially powerful work bringing to life. While there were a few other directions I was considering and people who would have done a phenomenal job, but ultimately I can’t imagine anyone other than Rae taking this project on.

In many ways, the audiobook is the way the story of The Wilderlands is designed to be experienced as it focuses on a teller reciting a story to a gathered group of people during a cold winter night. Rae does such a good job performing the book that I do genuinely believe that the experience of listening is distinct from the read experience.

You can also find Rae’s on the Observable Radio podcast, “a found footage podcast of analogue radio and retro sci-fi",” as well as a voice in What’s in the Rift? an “actual play/audio drama hybrid” podcast. They also narrate audio versions of Transpective articles on Tumbleweird.

Below I’ll include links to most of the platforms you can find the audiobook on now, but before I do that, I want to mention Libby.

Libby is an app used by libraries across the U.S. that let’s people check out audiobooks. Currently, I don’t believe any libraries would provide The Wilderlands on Libby since it’s a fairly new indie-published book. That said, there is a way to recommend a book through Libby. If you do that and if the library decides to get the book, boom, you and other library patron’s should be able to listen without paying for the book.

In any case, here’s some of the more immediate ways to listen to the book:

Libro FM: If you use Libro FM you can also throw some support toward your local bookstore when you become a member or buy my book.

Spotify: There’s a lot of practices from Spotify that I don’t particularly like and I’m still somewhat unsure exactly how their audiobook business model works. That said, it’s a service a lot of my fellow millennials use and I’m working on making it free for Spotify members.

Apple: I imagine a lot of the people who don’t use Spotify will probably be Apple/iTunes users and the book is available there as well. I don’t believe the book would be included in an Apple membership, but let me know if I’m wrong.

Audible: I don’t love a lot of Audible’s business practices (among other things, the website’s royalty rate which means that if I make my book exclusive with them, I’d get 80% of every sale; since I didn’t do that I only get 25% of every sale). I’ve got my book here because that’s where a lot of listeners are going to be, so no shade if that’s where you prefer to listen.

Whatever the case, you can also listen to the first chapter of the audiobook below before deciding to pick up a copy!
