What is Light Keeper Chronicle?
At the moment, I am closing in on finishing the first full draft of the second Light Keeper Chronicle book. Even though the first book in the series was my first book ever, I’ve been so focused on talking about The Wilderlands, that I wanted to take some time to talk about the series.
So, in case you haven’t looked at or heard about my on-going fantasy series, here’s some of the broad strokes.
What is Light Keeper Chronicle?
Light Keeper Chronicle is my fantasy series that follows Lenzey Wright, a middle school girl who—after being kidnapped under strange circumstances—discovers she and her friends are Element Keepers. In the world of Garibain, Element Keepers are heroes of prophecy from our world who are destined to save Garibain from a great threat. Specifically, the threat of an evil king.
There are two problems though.
First, as much as Lenzey wants to help, she struggles to even imagine hurting her enemies. Anyone who knows her knows that the idea of her killing someone—no matter how evil—is laughable. On balance, Lenzey is perhaps the worst possible chosen one for the apparent prophecy.
Second, Lenzey and her friends are not allowed to see or hear the prophecy that the wizards of Garibain says tells of them. Meaning that they must take the wizards at their word about what should be done and whatever is supposed to happen next.
Thus, the Element Keepers are left to navigate a new and complicated world that is filled with equal parts danger and adventure.
Who is Light Keeper Chronicle aimed at?
I think readers roughly 10-14 years old will get the most out of the series. I very much wrote the series inspired by books I read growing up. Things like Fablehaven, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Inheritance Cycle. While there are deeper messages, I hope I’ve principally crafted a fantasy adventure where the characters get to show off magical abilities and see fantastic places and people.
That said, I write the books with the hopes older readers can get a decent bit out of them.
While the narrative focused on the Element Keepers—who generally start at about 12-years-old and get older as the story goes on—many of the side characters are adults and the problems all the characters deal with are wide spanning.
On one level, readers will get a story with adventure, action, intrigue, and magical powers. On another level, the book asks questions like: Who controls the flow of information? At what point does kindness become weakness? What do we owe to people we do not know who we nonetheless have the power to help?
How long is the series?
Right now the only published book is the first, Light Keeper Chronicle: The Unspoken Prophecy. While I don’t have a solid date yet, I hope for the second book to be released next year (2027).
The number of books I planned for the series has fluctuated over the years, but currently I expect there to be five books total.
